- US-China Tech Ties: Breaking Up is Hard to Do
Joseph Chinyong Liow, dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, Tan Kah Kee Chair in Comparative and International Politics, and professor at RSIS, wrote in his commentary that TikTok, possibly the most downloaded app among American post-millennials today, triggered an uproar in recent weeks when this seemingly innocuous social media streaming platform found itself caught up in the storm of Sino-US tech rivalry. The harsh reality is that the ongoing effort to curtail China’s technological progress is too little, too late. The fact of the matter is that China is now a major global technology power and a net provider of technology. Simply put, decoupling is not about to bring the dividends the Trump administration hopes. That ship has long since sailed.
