Time to Rethink our Expectations of Immigrants and Where They Belong?
There are learning points for both Singaporeans and immigrants from the incident where a former DBS employee posted a picture on social media of a T-shirt with a graphic of the Singapore flag being ripped to reveal an Indian flag underneath. On the one hand, locals may need to recalibrate their expectations of immigrants’ unchanging affiliation to Singapore as identity is contextual, wrote NTU RSIS senior fellow Norman Vasu. On the other hand, immigrants need to be cognisant of social norms quickly as a nation is a community founded on accepted public conduct informed by these norms, he added.
