- Biden’s Presidency and the ‘First Hundred Days’ Myth
The American media is flush with “First Hundred Days” assessments of the Biden administration, even before the 100th-day mark on April 29. Dr Adam Garfinkle, a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at RSIS, writes in this commentary that Mr Biden is the right man at a time when American political polarisation has reached such an extreme that both parties are now more intent on legal stratagems to permanently throttle the opposition than they are at addressing policy challenges. The “First Hundred Days” of an administration indicates “spin” ahead; it’s not, because it cannot be, a sound predictor of all 1,460 days in sum. That’s fortunate, for what we’ve seen so far of the Biden era signals tough times ahead for American liberal democracy.
