Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. on Sunday said there have been “repeated offers” to abandon the Philippine claim to Sabah but told watchers of the territorial dispute with Malaysia “don’t even dream of it.” Analyst David Han of the RSIS in Singapore said there is little the Philippine side could do to change the status quo. In an RSIS commentary in 2016, Han said Malaysia would strongly safeguard its claims, as the area has rich maritime oil reserves and was a factor in electoral success. Sabah’s entry into Malaysia in 1963 was also legally recognised by the United Nations.
