Despite China ultimately wanting a denuclearised Korean peninsula as much as any other country, it is not in their interest to have the problem removed at this point because of their pending trade war with the Trump administration. What China will not want to see emerging from the talks is Mr Kim leaning towards the US, which is unlikely to happen, according to analysts. RSIS associate research fellow Shawn Ho noted that the fact that Mr Kim will take a train across China to reach Hanoi for the summit is an interesting signal that he trusts China; that even though he is travelling a long distance across land, he feels safe and well-protected.
