- What to Expect from Indonesian President’s Maiden U.S. Visit
Indonesian President Joko Widodo is due to make his maiden visit to the US from 25-29 October.
Boosting economic cooperation is said to be high on the agenda of the president, who has been trying to revive the country’s slowing economy since taking office a year ago.
The Indonesian leader is expected to address concerns over economic protectionism and convince US business community to boost investment in Southeast Asia’s biggest economy.
… There is also the importance of engaging the US to work with Indonesia to help shape constructive regional power dynamics, particularly in the South China Sea, The Straits Times reports on 24 October, citing expert and Associate Professor Leonard Sebastian.
“Pragmatism, though, will be the order of the day as China is aggressive in terms of trade offers and investment cooperation with Indonesia due to the convergence of China’s Maritime Silk Road and the Indonesia’s Global Maritime Fulcrum,” he adds.
