Beyond the Pomp and Circumstance of Trump’s Pyongyang Policy
Joseph Chinyong Liow, Dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences; Tan Kah Kee Chair in Comparative and International Politics; and professor at the RSIS, wrote in a commentary that President Donald Trump’s meandering approach to North Korea continues to bewilder. In just one year, all that sabre-rattling has given way to the most unlikely and intriguing of bromances. After 2.5 years in power, it is apparent that, for the Trump administration, the President’s personal rapport – or lack thereof – with counterparts plays an important role in foreign policy. Getting the North Korean regime to disarm and denuclearise was always going to be a tall order for any American president. Hence, while hardly perfect, it does appear that – notwithstanding the American bluster and feints – a nuclear freeze is the most realistic proposition, given the circumstances.
