Why Workfare Works Better for Singapore than a Minimum Wage
In a commentary, Dr Chew Soon Beng, a Senior Fellow with the International Political Economy Programme at RSIS and Dr Linda Low, an associate professor of economics at SUSS’ School of Business, discussed whether Singapore should have a minimum wage and whether that would be better than the current Progressive Wage Model and the Workfare scheme. They suggested that Workfare works better because it helps Singaporean workers upgrade to better-skilled jobs with higher pay rather than compete with foreign workers and that the best option for Singapore is to promote training and retraining of our workforce at all levels.
