ICA Trials Eye Scans to Boost Border Security
Eye scans for Singaporeans and permanent residents are being trialled at Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints, and Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, as part of plans by Singapore’s border agency to better secure the borders. This involves officers scanning travellers’ iris images in addition to fingerprint verification. As a global hub for air travel, Singapore, which also operates one of the busiest land checkpoints in the world, must adopt better technologies that can make immigration clearance more efficient both for ICA and travellers, said Mr Muhammad Faizal Abdul Rahman from RSIS’ Centre of Excellence for National Security.
