Lecture Abstract:

What are the prospects for a quick border settlement between India and China in view of the atmospherics visible in the Xi and Modi era? While at one level both sides say they are ready for a quick “out of the box” settlement, on the other, the differences between what they say and what they do in relation to their border indicates that the problems remains complicated. It is clear that the settlement will not be on the basis of old maps and claims, but will be a political bargain. But do the two political leaders, though strong men, have the political capital to expend on a political bargain?

About the Speaker:

Dr. Manoj Joshi is a Distinguished Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation, New Delhi, heading its national security initiative. Previously, he was a journalist and worked with some of India’s leading newspapers and news magazines, including the Hindu, Times of India, Hindustan Times and India Today. He continues to write regular columns in various newspapers and is also a TV commentator on national and international politics. He is the author of two books on the Kashmir issue and has written several papers in professional journals.

He has been a member of India’s National Security Advisory Board and, in 2011, was appointed by the Government of India to the Task Force on National Security chaired by Mr Naresh Chandra. He is a graduate from St Stephen’s College, Delhi University and has a PhD from the School of International Studies (SIS), Jawaharlal Nehru University. He has been a Visiting Professor at SIS and a Visiting Fellow at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, Australian National University and the Australia India Institute affiliated with the University of Melbourne.
