Synopsis

This workshop gives the participants insights and some hands on experience in the Life Psychological theory and method of anti-radicalization conducted by mentors in terms of the Aarhus Model. The course is mostly practical, aimed at demonstrating the tools of mentoring.

During the course the participant will have learned how life challenges of the mentee (as a person in danger of radicalization or already have obtained a violent extremist mindset) can lead to an extremist trajectory in life due to a dangerous and disordered answer to these life challenged. Furthermore, the participants will have learned how guiding the mentee setting alternative non-extremist and non-illegal life goals – and training general human life skills underpinning this process – may help the mentee into a non-extremist life trajectory in accordance with law, citizenship and societal inclusion.

This workshop may be of interest and attuned to policy makers (gaining inside in the mindset and basic ideas of the life psychological method of anti-radicalization) as well as police officers, social workers and psychologist who works in direct contact with radicalized/extremists or who trains and supervises anti-radicalization personnel (gaining insight in the skillset of life psychological mentoring).

About the Speaker

Preben Bertelsen is a professor in societal and personality psychology at the department of psychology and behavioral sciences of Aarhus University (research unit Life Psychology). The research he leads focuses on risk study factors and the accelerators of radicalization and extremism (RARE), in collaboration with Aarhus Municipality, East Jutland’s Police, the Ministry of Immigration and Integration and the National Center for Prevention of Extremism.
