The research
programmes lead to the award of the
degrees of Doctor of Philosophy.
Candidates
pursue an independent but supervised
research in an
approved field
of advanced study based on which a
thesis must be
submitted. The award of the research
degree is based entirely on the work
presented in the thesis.
Candidates
are also required to
attend classes and pass the examinations
in at least 3 to 6 subjects. Selection
of subjects is made after consultation
with the
research supervisor. There may also
be other additional requirements
depending on the individual schools.
Candidates who are admitted will
have to undergo a Qualifying
Examination as well as a Confirmation
Exercise.
The
Subjects,
Qualifying Examination and Confirmation
exercise must be completed within
a specific period of time.
Candidates
will each be assigned one or more supervisors
to guide
them in
their research. Candidates are
required to keep in regular
contact with their supervisors
whom they may consult on any matter
relating
to
their research. Once a year, the
supervisors will submit
a report on the progress of each
candidate under their supervision.
On
the completion of the research, the
candidate is required to
submit a thesis
on his/her research for examination.
For the degree of
Doctor of Philosophy, there is
also an oral examination on the
subject
matter
on his/her thesis and other related
subjects.
Candidates
whose progress, in the opinion of the
University,
have
not been satisfactory
may be required by the University
at any time
to terminate their candidature.
Admission
Requirements
The admission
requirements are as follows:
1) Bachelor’s degree and Master’s
degree in a related discipline and the
ability to pursue research in the candidate’s
proposed field of
advanced study. Applicants must also
demonstrate competency in English and
the ability to do independent research.
2) For
International Students
For applicants whose mother tongue
is not English, a good TOEFL score
(600
[Paper-based] or 240 [Computer-based])
is required.
Test dates must be within 2 years
or less from the date of your application.
At
present, the University admits all
students as Research Students
in the
first instance with the students
expected to be confirmed as
Ph.D. candidates at the end of

Leave
Of Absence
After admission,
a candidate must pursue in the University
throughout his/her candidature, his/her
approved course of advanced study
and research. Unless specifically exempted
by the Academic Board from this requirement,
a candidate who is unable to fulfill
this
condition must seek leave of absence
through his supervisor, from the Board
of Graduate Studies in advance.

The Board will determine whether the
leave granted to any candidate will
justify an extension of the maximum
period of candidature. If,
during the period of leave of absence
granted to a candidate, rules relating
to his/her candidature are amended,
the candidate on his
return from leave must expect to be
governed under the amended rules.
Pre-Requisite
Coursework
Full-Time
and Part-Time Research Student must
take a number of MSc coursework subjects
to be selected from the Master of
Science
(Strategic Studies), Master of Science
(International Relations), Master of
Science (International Political Economy)
and Master of
Science (Asian Studies) programmes
as well as two PhD core courses - P9001
The Advanced Study of International
Politics: Concepts,
Methods and Research Design and P9002
Quantitative Methods in the Study of
International Politics. Research Students
must also
attend several seminars and pass the
non-examinable module S6007 Analyzing
International Politics: Concepts and
Methods.
Thesis
The thesis
(written in English) must contain
original work or critical interpretation
worthy of publication. The length
of the thesis should
not exceed 80,000 words (including
footnotes but excluding appendices,
bibliography, maps, charts, statistical
tables, graphs, illustrations,
etc.) It must be submitted within sixty
months of the date of his/her admission
as a candidate for the degree.
Examination
The candidate,
after submitting his thesis, must
present himself for an oral examination
on the subject matter of the thesis
and related
subjects.
Scholarships
The
University provides research scholarships
to candidates with outstanding academic
records to enable them to pursue higher
degree studies by research on a full
time basis. Applications for the Research
Scholarship are opened throughout the

for the NTU Research Scholarship. You
may apply by indicating on the online
application form for
higher degree admission (Research).
RSIS
also offers a limited number of research
scholarships
for prospective candidates intending

Research
Fee and Other Fees
Every year, fees are reviewed and subject to revision. As and when
fees are revised, the new fees will be applicable to all existing
and
new students.
Fees
for each academic year
must be paid
in advance and
within the stipulated
periods. The research
fee is payable
on a semester
basis, at the beginning of the August and January semesters,
upon receiving
a bill from Office
of Finance. New
students who enroll
or
existing students who convert to self-financing basis within
the
first half of a semester will pay research fees for the entire
semester.
New students who enroll or existing students who convert to self-financing
basis within the second half of a semester will pay research
fees for half of the semester (Note: There is no application
fee for research programmes).
A
candidate who withdraws
from his/her programme
two or more weeks
after the commencement
of his/her candidature
or the
commencement of the semester is liable to pay the fees due
for the semester. Persons who fail to pay fees within the stipulated
periods
will have their names struck off the register of higher degree
candidates. A person whose name has been thus struck off but
who is
otherwise eligible to continue his candidature will be reinstated
only after he has settled all outstanding fees and paid a re-registration
fee of $52.50. The University Council reserves the right to
alter fees at any time without notice.
