As a researcher in the Military Studies Programme, Ben works primarily on naval affairs. Topics that he is particularly interested in are maritime aviation, sub-surface warfare, anti-access/area-denial strategies/capacities, and the naval history of World War Two. His secondary research areas include airpower, irregular warfare, maritime hybrid warfare, as well as light-infantry and special operations. Ben’s writings have appeared in the peer-reviewed publications Naval War College Review and the Journal of Military and Strategic Studies, on top of websites like The Diplomat, The National Interest, and RUSI Defence Systems. He has been quoted on defence/security issues in various leading media outlets, such as Jane’s Navy International, South China Morning Post, and Voice of America.
Ben also teaches junior and mid-ranking personnel of the Singapore Armed Forces (from officer cadets up to the staff college level) a wide variety of topics, like seapower, airpower, insurgency/counter-insurgency, force transformation, and joint operations.
