RSIS NTS Team Visits ASEAN Secretariat, Jakarta

On 30 August, Head of the RSIS Centre for Non-Traditional Security (NTS) Studies, Associate Professor Mely Caballero-Anthony and Professor Paul Teng, Senior Fellow (Food Security) with the NTS Centre visited the ASEAN Secretariat, Jakarta to meet with Dr. Somsak Pipoppinyo, Director of the Finance, Industry & Infrastructure Directorate, ASEAN Economic Community Department. Head of Centre attends 2nd meeting of the GCST Working Group on Regional Security in Buenos Aires

From 16 to 17 August 2010, Associate Professor Mely Caballero-Anthony, Head of the RSIS Centre for Non-Traditional Security (NTS) Studies, attended the 2nd meeting of the Global Consortium on Security Transformation (GCST) Working Group on Regional Security from Above and Below, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. RSIS Centre for NTS Studies’ commentaries published in the media

A commentary on ‘Facing Food Shortages: Urban Food Security in an Age of Constraints’ written by RSIS Centre for NTS Studies’ Associate Research Fellow Pau Khan Khup Hangzo was published in The Straits Times under the title of ‘Feeding Urban Masses: A Key World Challenge’ on 22 August 2010. Another commentary, ‘Up in Smoke: Peatland Fires in Russia and Indonesia’, by Associate Research Fellow Sofiah Jamil, was published in The Jakarta Post and the Asia News Network on 24 August 2010. Also published were ‘Pakistan’s Flood: How Not to be Caught Off Guard’ by  Associate Research Fellow Irene A Kuntjoro in The Jakarta Post print edition, 28 August 2010; and ‘The Benefits of an Aging Population in Asia’ by the Centre’s Senior Research Fellow Dr Bill Durodie in The Jakarta Globe  on 31 August 2010. A commentary by the Centre’s Visiting Associate Fellow Mr Evan A Laksmana was published under the title ‘The TNI: Strategic Changes and Implications’ in The Jakarta Post, 1 September 2010.

Centre staff graduate with Master’s from RSIS

Master’s students cum research analysts at the Centre for NTS Studies – Kevin Punzalan, PK Hangzo and Sofiah Jamil – graduated from the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) in July after two years of part-time study. Read more.

Seminar on ‘Overview of the Recent Developments of Myanmar-China Relations’

In a seminar organised by the RSIS Centre for NTS Studies, Dr Tharaphi Than, Lector in the Department of Southeast Asia in the School of African and Oriental Studies, London, spoke about the history of armed groups in Myanmar’s civil war and how the government’s strategy in dealing with them has continued to affect the country’s relations with China. MacArthur Asia Security Initiative (MASI) Annual Meeting

The RSIS Centre for Non-Traditional Security (NTS) Studies participated in the MacArthur Asia Security Initiative (MASI) 2010 Annual Meeting in Seoul from 7-9 July 2010. Building on the success of the inaugural MASI Grantees Meeting and Official Launch held in Singapore in May 2009, the second annual meeting organised by the East Asia Institute in Seoul brought together over 46 participants from 35 institutions across 9 countries in Asia. RSIS Centre for NTS Studies’ “In Conversation” Series

This latest collection of “In Conversation” interviews showcases the thoughts of experts and scholars on the issues of health, the Responsibility to Protect and nuclear energy, in relation to non-traditional security. The interviews were conducted on the sidelines of the conference on ‘Strengthening Health and Non-Health Response Systems in Asia’, the regional consultation on ‘the Responsibility to Protect’, and the ‘Nuclear Energy and Human Security’ workshop respectively. Food Security Expert Group Meeting on ‘Food First: Ensuring Food and Nutrition for Urbanites’

Executive Summary

The RSIS Centre for Non-Traditional Security (NTS) Studies convened a two-day Food Security Expert Group Meeting in Singapore on 4–5 August 2010. The objective of the meeting was to:

  • Examine the context of ‘Urban Food Security’ relative to global food security and rural food security.
  • Explore the development of an ASEAN Integrated Food Security Management Information System.
  • Assist in developing a research agenda on urban food security, including identifying potential projects and collaborators.
  • Identify possible roles for Singapore in the global food system.

The Meeting was attended by experts, resource persons and participants from multilateral groups such as the World Food Programme (WFP), the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) and the ASEAN Food Security Information System (AFSIS); bilateral groups such as the International Development Research Centre (IDRC); international and regional research institutions such as the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA); universities such as the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU); local and international agribusiness firms; and relevant Singapore government agencies.
