Strengthening Health and Non-Health Response Systems in Asia
18–19 March 2010Venue: Holiday Inn Singapore Orchard City Centre Hotel
The RSIS Centre for Non-Traditional Security (NTS) Studies will host a conference titled Strengthening Health and Non-Health Response Systems in Asia as part of the broader NTS programme on Health and Human Security. The conference aims to collectively identify priority action areas so as to close the gap between existing health systems and local communities' health needs, and to examine ways to improve on non-medical responses in an epidemic or pandemic disease outbreak, particularly in countries without adequate surge capacity. The conference will bring together multiple stakeholders in regional and global health governance, which would include policymakers, analysts, medical practitioners, academics, as well as representatives of civil society groups and international organizations.
The conference aims to:
- Identify the capabilities, redundancies, critical gaps, constraints and challenges faced by health systems in the region;
- Assess the non-medical response of countries when faced with the surge capacity of an epidemic or pandemic disease outbreak such as H1N1;
- Draw linkages between health systems and regional/global health governance;
- Examine ways to enhance international co-operation among multiple stakeholders in strengthening health systems in the region, identifying areas where local, national and international priorities overlap; and
- Come up with policy options and recommendations for the strengthening of health and non-medical response systems in the context of potential emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.
