The NADI Workshop on Enhancing National Centres for Disaster Response: Building Capacity and Expertise

The NADI Workshop on “Enhancing National Centres for Disaster Response: Building Capacity and Expertise”, hosted by the Military Science and History Department (MSHD), Ministry of National Defence, Lao PDR, was held at the Santi Resort and Spa, Luang Prabang, Lao PDR, from 18 to 21 October 2016. COL Soulivanh Sengchanh (Deputy Director-General, MSHD) chaired the Workshop. Representatives from the NADI institutions of Brunei, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam attended the Workshop. Cambodia was not represented at the Workshop. The meeting highlighted and discussed lessons learnt in previous disasters and potential ways forward to improve national and regional levels of coordination and capacity building. The meeting also concurred on the recommendations to advance regional HADR coordination though the establishment of national coordination centres, the building of human resource capacities and expertise, the inclusion of existing organisations and centres as part of regional coordinating efforts, and the establishment of a “Regional Crisis Management and Response Centre”, to be made to the ADMM Track for their consideration.
