» Singapore - WTO Third Country Training Programme: WTO-TFCTN Parliamentarian Workshop
RSIS’ Temasek Foundation Centre for Trade and Negotiations (TFCTN) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) hosted a 3 day workshop for regional parliamentarians on trade. The workshop aimed to increase the capacity of regional legislators to engage in international trade negotiations. This includes a deeper understanding of the WTO, current and future negotiating issues in international trade, and a sustained focus on the particular concerns of developing states in the process.

» RSIS-UNODC Workshop for ASEAN Member States on “Developing an Integrated Approach to Maritime Security through the Counter-Terrorism Conventions, Criminal and International Law: Legal Perspectives, Capacity Building”
Co-organised with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the workshop addressed legal experts from ASEAN member states and advanced efforts to promote the ratification and the full legislative implementation of the 1988 SUA Convention, the 2005 SUA Protocol, and other universal conventions that are instrumental to suppressing offences committed at sea. The workshop also provided practitioners and experts with a forum to share expertise and good practices, and be exposed to international experience in implementing relevant legislation.

» RSIS receives US$2.5 million from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation
RSIS received US$2.5 million from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to conduct research in non-traditional security and regional security cooperation. The grant is part of a US$68 million Asia Security Initiative by the MacArthur Foundation over a seven-year period to develop new ideas to address Asia’s security challenges. RSIS is the largest beneficiary of the Initiative and is the only Singaporean institution selected as a core institution to lead research in one of 3 research clusters. RSIS’ Centre for Non-Traditional Security Studies will be receiving US$2.2 million while the Multilateralism and Regionalism Programme will receive US$300,000.

» Joint Report on “Countering Internet Radicalisation in Southeast Asia”
This report is the result of a collaborative research effort by RSIS and the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) to explore the potential for religious radicalisation over the Internet. The report finds that the Internet can significantly contribute to the radicalisation process. The focus of the research is on Southeast Asian jihadist websites and the report includes policy recommendations for governments to counter possible ways the Internet can be used to facilitate terrorism.

Organised by RSIS’ International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research (ICPVTR), in collaboration with the Religious Rehabilitation Group (RRG), the 3-day international conference included over 20 invited speakers from countries with known rehabilitation programmes. Over 140 security specialists, psychologists and counsellors active in both research and in the operational process of rehabilitating extremists and terrorists participated as well.

» Dialogue on Trade Policy nexus with Climate Change and Sustainable Development Developments for the Asia-Pacific Region
RSIS’ Temasek Foundation Centre for Trade & Negotiations (TFCTN), in cooperation with the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD), organized the first in a series of dialogues aimed at fostering better understanding among the various stakeholders from the different countries in the APEC region on the linkages between trade and climate change.

The dialogues will bring together a group of 25-30 key stakeholders including international experts, policy-makers from the region, climate change negotiators and representatives from the business community, academia and civil society. This first meeting was deliberately scheduled at the tail-end of the APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting in order to benefit from complementary logistical arrangements for those APEC officials attending this and related meetings.

» Indonesia's 2009 General Elections: Framework and Challenges
Organised by RSIS' Indonesia Programme, the seminar was Part One of the Seminar Series on Indonesia's 2009 Elections. The seminar covered key aspects of the election framework, addressed issues related to the management of the elections and its system, as well as delivered forecasts and analysis based on recent surveys.

Presenting the issues to the large audience at the seminar were three distinguished guests: Mrs. Sri Nuryanti, member of the General Election Commission (KPU), Mrs. Wirdyaningsih, member of the General Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu), as well as Dr. Yudi Latif, Executive Director of the Reform Institute.
