Alumni's Testimonials

Moses Caesar Assa, MSc (Strategic Studies), Indonesia
Studying at RSIS had been an amazing intellectual and social experience. Intellectually, majoring in Strategic Studies had widened my perspectives. The programme was not restricted to military defence and security, but included perspectives into politics, society, economics and diplomacy.

On the social front, I got to be acquainted with students from other countries and this had provided me with opportunities to establish a wider network. Moreover, the egalitarian relationship between lecturers and students had definitely contributed to more dynamic discussions in the classroom.

KEITH ERIC FLICK, MSc (International Relations), United States of America
The most frequent question I was asked at the beginning of my studies at RSIS was, "why did you come all the way to Singapore?" Because my research interests are in international relations of Asia, my answer was that it seemed only logical to study in the region itself. Now, having completed the program, I can offer a much more detailed rationale. To begin, the faculty at RSIS in addition to being highly respected in their field is - because of the small and selective nature of the program - very accessible to students. RSIS is home to several research centres, which means timely and relevant research is taking place around you. The incredibly diverse make-up of the student body also further enriches the learning experience by exposing students to opinions and perspectives they may not have come into contact with in their own countries. Being located in an international hub, the number of visiting scholars, statesmen, and experts who pass through RSIS and offer talks also adds to the out of classroom learning experience. In short, the master's degree program at RSIS was a great springboard from which I am now able to continue my studies in international relations at the doctoral level.
Evan A Laksmana, MSc (Strategic Studies), Indonesia
Studying at RSIS has not only been a wonderful privilege for me, but it has also been a life-changing experience. The first-rate faculty members, combined with the school's practical policy-oriented focus, have allowed RSIS to provide many wonderful opportunities for its students, like myself, to embark on a great future career. More importantly however, I have not only gained much practical knowledge and a rigorous academic training, but I have also been fortunate to make many new great friends. The highly diverse student body has also allowed me to listen to various viewpoints from all over the world-which has truly widened my horizon. In the end, my time at RSIS has truly been an unforgettable one.
Kevin John McQueen, MSc (Asian Studies), United Kingdom
My time at RSIS proved to be a very enjoyable year for me for several reasons. Without doubt it was challenging, but at the same time rewarding. The standard of teaching was excellent, the readings were up-to-date and informative, and the analysis insightful and profoundly stimulating. Studying at RSIS also helped me gain greater knowledge and understanding of the region in general, which is particularly relevant to my career as a journalist in Hong Kong. I also appreciated some of the excellent speakers that we were privileged to hear over the past year, such as Professor Stephen Walt, Professor Vinod Aggarwal, Dr Ashley J Tellis, and Mr Nik Gowing from the BBC. But what made the year particularly memorable for me was the company of a great bunch of students and the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. Some great friendships were made and since I left Singapore, I have really missed them!
Pan Rongfang, MSc (International Political Economy), China
After years of working in multinational corporations, I decided to enrol in RSIS' MSc Programme in International Political Economy. It turns out that studying at RSIS is one of the most enlightening and rewarding experiences that I have ever had. The intense programme allows students to develop critical thinking and rigorous analysis through a wide range of lectures, seminars, presentations, case studies, term papers and interactive discussions. It keeps pace with the real world of international affairs, and at the same time, offers theoretical concepts as well as research methods. The professors are not only professional but also approachable and extremely helpful. I have truly enjoyed my time at RSIS. I know I had made the right decision.
Jenna Park Ji Hyun, MSc (International Political Economy), South Korea
Studying in RSIS was truly an eye-opening experience for me and it has greatly contributed to broadening my perspectives on international issues. The courses and the degree of academic effort they require are daunting indeed, but they play a great role in building up your quality as an international character in the globalized community today. In addition, studying in one of the most lively multi-ethnic countries in Asia along with fellow students and staff from diverse cultural and personal backgrounds was another major factor that made me cherish the RSIS experience even more. I can confidently say that my time in RSIS has left me with priceless lessons and unforgettable memories.
Maria Eloisa V Ramos, MSc (International Political Economy), The Philippines
Choosing to study at RSIS was an easy choice. Having an international setting in an Asian country is its most valuable asset. The modules offered are diverse and can cater to the interest of all its students. The faculty is highly competent and very approachable. The though-provoking and candid discussions among students are a great opportunity for learning and socializing as well. The seminars featuring speakers from all over the world, which are open to us, are remarkable and relevant to students' needs and interests. The programme is definitely worth it - a perfect balance of learning and fun.
Edwin San, MSc (Strategic Studies), Singapore
I was privileged and fortunate to have been awarded a Legal Service Commission Scholarship to read for the MSc (Strategic Studies) at the RSIS. The MSc (SS) is a multi-disciplinary programme, drawing heavily upon the social sciences, in particular the disciplines of international relations, history, political science and law. Undoubtedly, it was academically rigorous and challenging. However, under the expert tutelage and firm guidance of the RSIS professors, we slowly came to grips with the demands presented by the required book reviews, presentations, term papers and of course, examinations. In the spirit of RSIS's motto to "ponder the improbable", we were constantly challenged by our professors to re-think and re-assess our preconceptions and underlying assumptions, thus making for lively and often memorable class discussions. The administration support, such as the online academic journals and library resources, were also excellent. The diverse student enrolment also allowed for good interaction, cultural exchanges and forging of friendships among like-minded persons. Looking back, I can only express my joy and satisfaction at having pursued the MSc (SS) programme at RSIS and would, without any hesitation, recommend the same to any person so interested in security studies.
Yeap Su Yin, MSc (Strategic Studies), Malaysia
My mid-career decision to pursue a Masters degree at RSIS turned out to have been an excellent one for me. I found RSIS to be fast-paced and focused, with a first-class faculty that was extremely helpful and approachable. I was provided with a challenging and stimulating academic environment, with a strong practical foundation. My fellow students, who provided a good sounding board when discussing various issues, enhanced the learning environment. Further, there were plenty of fun-filled activities that promoted the interaction among faculty and students. All in all, I feel fortunate to have been a part of RSIS. I finished the year with a good academic framework, fond memories of my time at RSIS and a diary full of friends. I could not have asked for anything more from a Masters programme.
