Private Sector Organisations and Terrorism:

What companies should be aware of, and the mitigating measures they can adopt

There is no secret. Terrorists are going after soft targets – commercial buildings, shopping malls, banks, and tourist attractions. It may not necessarily be a 250kg car bomb. A much smaller amount of explosive is sufficient to cause substantive physical damage, disrupt businesses and adversely affect reputation and image. The probability of an attack may be small but the consequences and repercussions are catastrophic.

The continuing ideological influence of the Al Qaeda and the increasing number of homegrown terror groups are concerns which business leaders cannot afford to ignore while navigating their companies through the unknown, ever-changing and fragile business environment. In Singapore, we were recently reminded of the threat posed by the Jemiaah Islamiah.

This hastens the need to understand the impact of terrorism on businesses, and how companies can safeguard themselves.

Date: 7 May 08
