Research

Prof Matthews is a recipient of several research and fellowship awards from prestigious institutions like NATO and the World Bank. He has done extensive research across the world, from Asian countries like India, Pakistan, China, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia, to countries further afield, such as the United Kingdom, Sweden, the United States, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and Kenya. He conducted research on the impact of offsets on the UK defence industrial base, which will be published as monograph in 2012.


Selected Publications

Author and editor of 4 books including Managing the Revolution in Military Affairs and Japan’s Military Renaissance. He contributed chapters in many books on topics like defence economics, offset, defence collaboration and technology transfer strategy. The most recent example of his book chapters can be found in The Modern Defence Industry: Political, Economic, and Technological Issue (Praeger Security International, 2009) and Defence Procurement and Industrial Policy: A Small Country Perspective (Routledge, 2009). Professor Matthews has published tens of articles in double-blind refereed journals, such as Journal of Defence and Peace Economics, Journal of Defence Studies and Journal for Defence and Security Analysis. His writings have also been widely circulated in professional magazines such as Asia Pacific Defence Reporter and Defence Review Asia, and think-tank publication like UK-based RUSI Journal and Royal Institute of International Affairs.
