Asia's leading think-tank and professional graduate school of international affairs, the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, invite applications from suitably qualified individuals to join us for the following positions:


Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in the following specialization:

South Asia
Applicants are expected to have a good understanding of the external and domestic dynamics that impact on security and foreign policy issues in South Asia. They are also expected to develop courses on the international relations of South Asia, India's foreign/security policy, and South Asian comparative politics.

Successful applicants will teach up to two courses in the School's Master of Science Programmes. A relevant PhD and a good publication record are therefore essential requirements. Applicants are also expected to contribute to the School's research agenda, contribute to team research and policy-oriented projects, teach in short executive programmes, and organize conferences and seminars. Experience in policy-relevant research and publication would be useful.

Initial appointments are for three years, which are renewable, subject to mutual agreement. Those with the appropriate qualifications and experience may be appointed at the Associate Professor level.

Research Fellows in the following specializations:

Social Resilience and National Security (Centre of Excellence for National Security - CENS)
The successful applicant will commence in May 2012 on a 3-year contract (subject to renewal thereafter).

Areas of focus could include but are not limited to how factors such as multiculturalism, immigration and citizenship policies, as well as social class, impact on social resilience. The successful applicant is expected to contribute significantly to the research agenda of CENS and may be expected to teach at the postgraduate level as well.

Applicants should possess a PhD in a relevant field. The ability to perform quantitative research will be considered a bonus.

Radicalization Studies (Centre of Excellence for National Security - CENS)

The successful applicant will commence in the first half of 2012 on a 3-year contract (subject to renewal thereafter).

Areas of interest include but are not limited to:

  • causes and early warning indicators of violent extremism
  • counter-radicalization strategies and policies
  • global best practices in detainee rehabilitation
  • identity politics and violent extremism
  • the Internet and violent extremism

The successful applicant is expected to contribute significantly to the research agenda of CENS and may be expected to teach at the postgraduate level as well.

Applicants should possess a PhD in a relevant field or have substantial relevant working experience. Demonstrated familiarity with the Southeast Asian theatre in particular will be considered as a plus point.

Cyber Security
The successful candidate will be responsible for setting up the Cyber Security Programme at RSIS, which will focus primarily on cyber security threats and responses. Besides coordinating the Programme and doing research in the subject with the view of making policy recommendations, the candidate is also expected to seek grants that would enable the Programme to expand, and to undertake some teaching in short training programmes.

In addition to having the requisite research skills, the candidate is expected to have a Ph.D. in computer science or computer engineering. Experience in policy-relevant research and publication would be useful. The initial appointment is for three years, which is renewable, subject to mutual agreement.

Post-Doctoral Fellow (Centre of Excellence for National Security – CENS)

The Centre invites applications for a 24-month Postdoctoral Fellow position working on the broad theme of Governance, Resilience and National Security commencing in May 2012. Areas of interest could include but are not limited to:

  • conceptualizations of resilience
  • the relationship between complexity and resilience
  • governance and a resilient national security ecosystem

The successful applicant is not expected to teach but will be expected to contribute significantly to the research agenda of CENS.

Applicants should possess a PhD in a relevant field. The ability to perform quantitative research will be considered a bonus.

For all 3 positions, applicants should hold Master’s degree in political science, economics or related disciplines. Applicants should also possess aptitude, interest and commitment to in-depth research in the relevant field. The ability to work both independently and occasionally as part of a small team is essential and applicants must be fluent in English, with good writing and research skills.

Research Analyst (Centre of Excellence for National Security – CENS)

The Centre is inviting applications for the position of Research Analyst from suitably qualified individuals commencing in May 2012.

CENS seeks a highly dedicated candidate who will assist the Head and Deputy Head of the Centre in research support, presentations and note-taking during meetings.

Applicants should be able to work independently, be fluent in English and possess good writing and research skills. Graduates in political science, international relations, economics and related disciplines are welcome to apply.

Associate Research Fellow and Research Analyst (Centre for Non-Traditional Security (NTS) Studies)

The Centre invites motivated and qualified individuals for the above positions to carry out NTS research agenda. Research will
focus on issues related to environmental security, food security, conflict, energy security, as well as health and human security.

Associate Research Fellow is required to perform the following:

Research Work

  • Lead research team/s and help conceptualise research projects.
  • Advise and guide team members (RAs) contributing to the Centre’s publications.
  • Carry out research to contribute to the range of publications produced by the Centre.
  • Contribute to the Centre’s website database regularly with relevant publications related to assigned field of research.
  • Represent the Centre at conferences, workshops and seminars (both local and overseas) related to assigned field of research.

Administrative work

  • Ensure research team’s adherence to publication deadlines set by the publications team.
  • Help in organising and coordinating NTS Events.

Research Analyst is required to perform the following:

  • Carry out research to contribute to the range of publications produced by the Centre.
  • Contribute to the Centre’s website database regularly with relevant publications related to assigned field of research.
  • Help in organising and coordinating events.

Candidates for the Associate Research Fellow position should possess a qualification of a Master's degree with a minimum of 2 years work experience and for the Research Analyst position, a Bachelor degree. Candidates should have background in the field of social science, international relations, sociology or other relevant fields. Possess an awareness of the human security and non-traditional security frameworks, on which the Centre’s work is fundamentally based. Aptitude, interest and commitment to conducting in-depth research in the relevant field assigned is a must. In addition it is preferable that candidates have an understanding of the nuances of interactions with Asian – particularly East Asian – stakeholders. Other qualities include the ability to work independently, be a motivated team player and is fluent in English (good writing and research skills are essential). Candidates with basic IT/ web-based skills in Adobe Dreamweaver, Photoshop and InDesign would have a distinct advantage.

Senior HR Executive

You will assist the HR and Admin Manager in managing the full spectrum of HR functions, including manpower planning and budgeting, recruitment and selection, compensation and benefits, performance management, and learning and development.

Candidates should possess a recognized diploma or degree (preferably in HR), or its equivalent, with 3 to 5 years’ HR generalist work experience. Applicants should also be well-versed with Singapore Labor Laws, as well as possess good communication, interpersonal and co-ordination skills.

Corporate Communications Executive, Strategic Planning & Projects

Reporting to the Head, Strategic Planning & Projects, the candidate will assist in developing and implementing communication plans and strategies as well as managing the School’s relationship with external parties including the media, the public and other organizations. In addition, the candidate is required to assist in coordinating conferences and public lectures if necessary.

Candidates should hold a recognized degree in Mass Communications/ Public Relations or equivalent with at least 3 years of working experience in public relations or corporate communications. Experience in events management and an interest in International Affairs and Security would be helpful. Applicants should also possess good interpersonal skills and a strong command of English and writing skills.

Administrative Officer, Graduate Programmes Office

The successful candidate will be responsible for the administration of the Professional Skills Enrichment Programme for students such as RSIS seminars, colloquiums, distinguished public lectures and workshops, as well as the Doctor of Philosophy Programme ranging from the selection and admission of research / PhD students, scholarships, time-tabling, examination, confirmation exercises, monitoring of students’ progress and submission of thesis. The candidate will also need to assist with the organization of student activities such as student gatherings and annual alumni gathers / mixers.

Candidates should possess a Diploma with 1 to 3 years of relevant working experience in administrative work and be proficient in MS Office applications. Ability to multi-task and track details is also essential. The candidate should be equipped with good organization skills, good interpersonal skills and be a team player too.
