RSIS Policy Report
"Indonesia and the 2011 ASEAN Chairmanship: Priorities and Prospects"

As of 1 January 2011, Indonesia assumed the chairmanship of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). With the growing importance of Southeast Asia in the global arena, hopes are high that Indonesia will seize the opportunity to push for concrete improvements toward the establishment of the ASEAN Community in 2015, as well as to promote democratic values and respect for human rights in the region. This policy brief will first look at the progress that has been made towards the establishment of an ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and an ASEAN Political and Security Community (APSC) and the challenges that still need to be addressed in the future, followed by recommendations. The second part will look at the issue of ASEAN beyond 2015, in order to assess the issues that potentially need to be tackled by ASEAN member countries following the successful establishment of an ASEAN Community in 2015.

Southeast Asia's Transition From Authoritarian Rule Offers Lessons For Middle East

"As people in the Middle East protest for freedom and democracy, many in Asia are reminded of their own struggle against authoritarian governments in the 1980s and 1990s. In Indonesia, the military’s role was also a concern after the fall of President Suharto in 1998. Some predicted that Southeast Asia’s largest nation would descend into sectarian violence and secessionist movements, and the military would take over. That has not happened. The Indonesian military was able to adapt to the changing political order. In Indonesia, the country’s largest Muslim organizations, Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, which have millions of members, also played critical roles in promoting democracy. What role Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood will play in the transition remains unclear."

- Interview with Assoc. Prof. Leonard C. Sebastian
(Coordinator of Indonesia Programme)
