“RSIS Welcomes an Old Friend: The First IDU Study Visit to RSIS”

The Indonesia Programme was privileged to host the first Indonesian Defense University's (IDU's) Study Visit to RSIS. The Study Visit took place from 22-27 August 2011.

During the one-week programme, IDU students attended five RSIS lectures together with RSIS students, as well as two seminars which were conducted exclusively for IDU students.

Aside from these lectures and seminars, IDU students also had the opportunity to explore and experience Singapore better by visiting several places of interest. These places include Fort Siloso in Sentosa, the Singapore Discovery Centre and Singapore Army Museum, the National Museum of Singapore, and Battle Box in Fort Canning. In addition to these public venues, the IDU participants also visited SAFTI-MI and Singapore’s Ministry of Defence.

The first group of participants that participated in the program consisted of 20 IDU students and five IDU staffs. The group was a mix of 17 military officers and eight civilians. Among the IDU staff present were M.G. Sonny E.S. Prasetyo (Commandant of the Institute of National War Strategy), B.G. Makmur Supriyatno (Director of Inter-Institutional Cooperation), and B.G. Djarot Budiyanto (Director of Academic Affairs).

The screening of Perempuan Berkalung Sorban (Woman with a Turban - 2009) was preceded by a most excellent dinner, prepared by the Embassy and served to over one hundred guests seated around ballroom-style tables within the Embassy‘s main function hall.

The screening was itself followed by a discussion chaired by Associate Professor Leonard C. Sebastian and featured Dr. Farish Noor and Mr Adri Wanto as discussants.

The film is directed by Hanung Bramantyo and inspired by an autobiographical novel, it explored issues of religion, radicalisation, pesantren (religious schools), feminism and the role of women in Indonesian society.
